I remember a Christmas when I got a doll and a baby buggy that was almost full sized. I loved that baby doll. I remember another one when I got a watch, and a musical jewelry box to keep my watch in. I remember the Christmas meals and the smells, The only time we ever got fruit was in our stockings once a year. We would get oranges, apples and tangerines. We had multi colored hard candy, and nuts as well in our stockings.

One year my older brother told me and my younger brother that he had seen where our parents had hid our gifts. He was 13 & (I was 12) & he was watching us while our parents were out shopping. We got our gifts down from the shelf in their closet ,and looked at our gifts, (they weren’t wrapped yet) My brother told us that we had to act surprised. I also got a beautiful musical jewelry box, that had a dancing ballerina in it. I got a Barbie doll record player and some 45’s. But we really spoiled our own Christmas by looking days in advance.I learned my lesson never to sneek a peek at my presents before Christmas ever again.

I remember thinking I was such a thoughtful child for putting all of the expensive presents I wanted on Santa’s list and the more inexpensive ones on the list for my parents. It was a nice thought anyway…lol

My mum always read us A Child’s Christmas in Wales and we still make her do it every year even though we’re all grownups

I have 2 that really stick out:

    1. Near Christmas, my mom decided the Christmas tree needed to be moved to another part of the room. I was about 4. My parents were moving the tree and my dad did something wrong, like knocking off ornaments or something along those lines. My mom is very stressed every year at Christmas (I still don’t know why, she loves the shopping part – it’s the decorating and having everything just right that drives her crazy) – anyway, so my dad messed up and so my mom got mad and shoved the Christmas tree over on top of him. I was mad!!! They had interrupted my watching Yogi Bear’s First Christmas!!! But after I saw what had happened,. we all laughed about it and had a good time.

    2. I asked one Christmas for a Cabbage Patch Kid that looked like my friend Chanel, who was an African American girl. (I’m white) – And my parents didn’t get me one. I thought this meant that they were racist and I got REALLY upset. Turned out the local toy store was sold out. That’s all.

I remember one year…and this is the honest to goodness truth….that my uncle went dumpster diving to get us gifts. Let me tell you we got some really nice stuff from him that year too. It was crazy. I remember hearing my parents talking about it and didn’t know what it was until years later…sounded fun though…dumpster diving…lol.

I also remember spending half the day with my Mom and then the other half with Dad and his family after I was 7. They divorced and they always kept us feeling possitive about it by telling us that we were lucky. 2 of everything! Two room, birthday cakes, yards, bikes, families really…and best of all Santa brought gifts to 2 houses!! What they didn’t realize is that by trying to out do one another we were getting all the good stuff too!!! Woot woot for us as kids and our barbies, Cabbage Patchs and Ninja Turtles!

Also Decorating the tree. Each year we got a new decoration for the tree from Santa…so we had to hang all our own up each year one by one…we sang carols and had cocoa. It was a nice time. I already started the tradition with my kids ages 1 and 3. They get their own ornaments on Christmas eve to add to the tree that night too and a pai of jammies to wear to bed. Which I think is a great idea because then in the am they have nice new jammies on for photos opening gifts!

Ok that is all from me. I could go on and on but I won’t. Take care, Mandy

Every Christmas, my father would bring home some special ornament for the house or tree: usually something with a mechanical trick to it. I looked forward to each new Christmas gadget :)
